Go has become the language of cloud infrastructure for good reasons, and they matter even more to a small business than to a large one.
Why Go#
- Fast and frugal. A Go service handles a large amount of traffic on the smallest hosting tier. Lower resource use means a lower monthly bill.
- Starts in milliseconds. That is ideal for serverless hosting that scales to zero between visitors and wakes instantly when one arrives.
- One self-contained program. There is no interpreter or runtime to install or patch on the server. The same build runs on Google Cloud, on another cloud or on your own machine.
- A strong standard library. HTTP, TLS, JSON and cryptography are all built in, so fewer third-party packages are needed. Every dependency you avoid is one less thing to keep secure.
- Easy to read. Go is deliberately simple. Code written today can be understood by another developer years from now.
Security as a default, not a feature#
Every backend I deliver includes the same baseline:
- All input validated and size-limited before it is used
- Parameterized database queries, so injection attacks have nothing to grab
- Least-privilege service accounts and secrets kept in Secret Manager, not in code
- Strict security headers, HTTPS only, and sensible rate limits
- Dependencies scanned for known vulnerabilities with
govulncheck
APIs that others can build on#
Whether your API serves your own web app, a mobile app or a partner’s system, it gets clear, consistent endpoints, predictable error messages and documentation. Then the next developer, whether that’s me or someone else, can work with it straight away.
